TL;DR at the bottom. To give you an idea of just how ridiculous this double points impact is going to have on the final race (and has had on the season). If the gap remains relatively unchanged in Sonoma Power needs to finish 4 th to protect a 40 point lead if Helio wins (depending on bonus points). Without double points Power would have a 75 point lead in the championship right now (Pagenaud would be 94 points back and mathematically eliminated). Without double points the 16 points Power would get just for starting the final 2 races would require Helio win one and finish 2 nd in the other.

Other than contrived results (which I hate) it seems double points has protected the championship this year. It totally wasn't necessary in years past, but this year Autoclub would probably be meaningless without them.

Extra points earned in double point races

Helio – 80

JPM – 80

RHR – 62

Pagenaud – 46

Power – 44

500 Qualifying points Helio gained 1 point on Power there. Power gained 4 on Pagenaud. So Simon would be 90 back (still eliminated) and Power would be 76 ahead of Helio.

I turned 34 yesterday. Maybe I'm turning into a cranky old man, but I hate what these numbers tell me about the new point system.

TL;DR - Without double points Helio would need a 1st and 2nd place finish with Power finishing 22nd (last) in the final 2 races just to tie Power for the championship lead.

Bernie sees nothing wrong with double points.

Better than F1 double points

Better? I think worse. In Indy Car there are 3 double point races not 1.

Until we get another Senna vs. Prost moment in the last race at Brazil where one Mercedes driver wrecks the other to protect the championship lead they have.

I think it's better because there's a reason for double points, that being that it's a race that's 500 miles instead of 250. Double the points for double the distance makes more sense for me then just putting on double points for nothing.

They're keeping him mathematically eligible.

The double points are all for oval races. Where are the double points road races?

I think the entire way the scoring changed this year is garbage. I'm 7 years younger than you, and evidently equally cranky.

Yes I agree with you on that, but I definitely makes sense for Indianaplis, since that is the crown of the series. Also I still don't think they are good, just better than F1. F1 could have also used a better track like Brazil instead of Yas Marina.

Brazil is not much better than Yas Marina. Might as well hand out Qualifying points at Monaco in leiu of double points if you want to weight a race more. Either that or increase the distance of one of your races and then award more points. Something anything other than double points for just another race.

As for Indy Car I'm OK with double points for the Indy 500. Not OK at Pocono and Autoclub.
